The correct name for the sport Americans mistakenly call football. The ball and rules of the game themselves being based on English Rugby, which itself evolved from football when a guy decided he wanted to try carrying the football instead of kicking it. Thus shape of football which was round so that it would roll on the ground when kicked was changed into a shape more conducive to being held in the hands.
