This word was first used at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign after undergrads realized that the word roommate did not adequately describe the relationship they had with one another. Individuals can transition from roommates to froondmates (after growing closer) or from friends to froondmates (after moving in to the same room or apartment)
