The practice of making a trip to the grocery store almost every single day and only buying food for one day's meals/snacks at a time, rather than shopping for the whole week, two weeks, or month. Often done by people who have a lot of free time on their hands - i.e. elderly retirees (hence the name), stay-at-home moms who are waiting for kids to get out of school, etc. This daily trip to the store is the main social event of their life.
