3,4-MethyleneDioxyPhenyl-2-Propanol
3,4-MethyleneDioxyPhenyl-2-Propanol (MDP2Pol) is a chemical with a boiling point of 125°C at 25mmHg. MDP2Pol is a yellowish oil which is an alcohol. It is formed from dilute phosphoric acid hydration of safrole (sulfuric acid isn't used because sulfuric acid is an oxidizing acid which rearranges MDP2Pol (3,4-MethyleneDioxyPhenyl-2-Propanol) to MDP1Pol (3,4-MethyleneDioxyPhenyl-1-Propanol). MDP2Pol is also formed by oxymercuration demercuration of safrole. MDP2Pol can be oxidized to MDP2P (3,4-MethyleneDioxyPhenyl-2-Propanone) by either sodium chlorite or sodium hypochlorite in hydrochloric acid and the byproduct is chlorine gas (wear a gas mask and do the reaction outside). It can also be oxidized by lead acetate. 3,4-MethyleneDioxyPhenyl-2-Propanol is also called Sesamyl-2-Propanol (Se2Pol, Ses2Pol, Sm2Pol), hydroxysafrole, and Sesamylisopropanol.
I formed 3,4-MethyleneDioxyPhenyl-2-Propanol by hydrating safrole with an aqueous dilute solution of phosphoric acid.
