Comes from the heroic act of Katniss Everdeen in the opening chapters of the Hunger Games, in which she volunteers herself instead of her sister to go to a gladiator-style battle to the death.
I had a presentation for Latin class today and I wasn't ready, but then Marissa katniss'd me and volunteered to go in my place. What a BRO.
