The nightfly
The nightfly is an album written
And produced by donald fagen 1/2 of the jazz Rock fusion duo "steely dan"(the other half being. The late Walter Becker.) This album marked fagens nascent foray into his Solo career. It was released on October 2nd.1982. the album itself is a sentient blend of post war 2 euphoria and cautious optimism. Fagen himself stated that the album was written from the perspective of e young teenage boy growing up in postwar suburban tracts like levittown. One thematic thread which runs throughout the album is an almost naive sense of optimism as evidenced by the song "igy"(90 minutes from New York to Paris well by '76 we'll be waiting there!) To counter balance this naivety
The song "new frontier" imagines survival in a post nuclear world. (Well.we're going to a wing ding a summer smoker underground
It's just a shelter that my dad. Built just in case the reds decide to 'push the button down!) The closing cut on the album is a prescient nod to the currently trendy south beach in Miami "walk between rain drops" ("on that fine day we'll find each other on that Florida shore and we'll walk between the rain drops...,.back to your door!")
