noob trap
An apparently reasonable in-game choice an uninformed (usually new) player can make, which is in fact subpar or even crippling. Often this becomes clear only a long time after the choice is made, by when it's irreversible.
A common feature of hardcore games is false complexity — an abundance of poorly explained mechanics and noob traps.

An unfamiliar game mechanic or other rule that new players will misunderstand, resulting in an undesired outcome for the noob.
Noob trap ex 1:
Mark specced all his skill points into fire damage spells, but little did he know all enemies in the game have 99% fire resistance.
ex 2:
Mark purchased the newly advertised $10 dollar mount from the cash shop, only to find that the next quest he did had a quest reward of the same mount he bought.
ex 3:
Mark attacked the cuccoo in kakariko village one too many times, because he thought it was cute the way the cuccoo ran away. Then the rest of the cuccoos came...

A lie or trick used by long time players to fool a new player into doing something stupid.
Someone noob trapped that kid into giving up his account password.
