plongitude
A platitude made for the express purpose of moving the conversation away from an uncomfortable topic.
"Tanya was bitching to me about her romantic problems, so I threw out a plongitude to get her to stop."
Plongitude
A plongitude is at right angles to any common platitude … viz. “the cat’s meow”, a platitude for something quite nice, turns into “the cat’s dogbite” to mean something very “not nice.”
The writer surprises her readers with frequent plongitudes eliciting knowing grins more than lohengrins.
