rat tale
The story somebody will tell you after ratting you out on something, the purpose being to keep you from kicking his ass for ratting you out in the first place.
John ratted me out for taking a box of printer paper from the office store room, and his rat tale was that if he didn't tell the boss who took it they would fire him.
