retirement dog
A dog acquired either during retirement or less commonly as a manisfestation of ENS (empty nesting syndrome) that is treated with a high degree of preference, most often surpassing that of any actual children a retiree has.
My parent’s retirement dog, Murphy, got more Christmas presents than me.
