A gladiator who had won his freedom (received his rudis) but chose to remain a gladiator
Not all continued to fight and there was a hierarchy of rudiarii such as trainers, helpers, referees, fighters, etc.
These were very popular with the public as they were experienced and could be relied on to provide a good show
