Scrub Check
noun. Similar to a skill check in TTRPGs, it is an impassable obstacle in a video game that is intended to ensure that the player has enough skill/knowledge/technique to proceed.
Generally used in game design because the player will genuinely not be able to defeat the game's challenges without learning to play better. e.g. Celeste's crystal hearts, non-optional soulslike bosses, etc.
A Scrub Check is NOT the padding out of a game by implementing sidequests, mandatory items, etc., it is rather the implementing of a hard limit/difficulty spike that a player without the requisite skill cannot pass.

"Ugh, I can't get past this huge barrier in chapter 9."
"Yeah, that's the Scrub Check for the rest of the level. Trust me, you are not going to win unless you know how to wavedash and wallbounce. The bonus levels will teach you."
