To Sherman, or Shermaning, is a gerund derived from the proper noun Sherman, a reference to William Tecumseh Sherman. General Sherman was a military leader on the Union side of the American Civil War who became famous for liberating Atlanta. His strategy of "hard war" consisted of pervasive civilian property destruction and burning of supplies to cripple any support the civil infrastructure could provide for pro-slavery forces.

Noun: An American. Cockney rhyming slang: Sherman Tank - Yank. Real Cockney rhyming slang only uses the first word, which sounds nothing like the thing being referred to in the rhyme so secrecy is preserved.

A slang term for illegal hallucinogenic mushrooms (aka "shrooms" or "magic mushrooms"). Often used as a code word for telephone conversations or conversations in public settings where talk of illegal activities could get one in trouble.

In such conversations Sherman is often referred to as a person, such as saying "is Sherman around?" to ask a dealer if he/she currently has any shrooms available for purchase.

As in reference to the British tank used in WWII, now denotes large females found at parties and other social gatherings (especially involving alcohol) that attempt to get play from unsuspecting males. Often, they are slow and clumsy, and are always extremely bulky. Approach with care.
