俚语 social work
释义

Social Work

The professional activity of helping individuals, groups, families, organizations, and communities to enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning and to create societal conditions favorable to their goals. Social work requires knowledge of human development and behavior; of social, economic, and cultural institutions, and of the interaction of all these factors.
Social workers use their knowledge and skills to provide social services to clients, as defined by the National Association of Social Workers. They help people increase their capacities for problem solving and help them obtain needed resources, facilitate interactions between individuals and between people and their environments, make organizations responsible to people, and influence social policies. One common misconception of social workers is that people believe that most of them are "baby snatchers.” People don't see the services provided by social workers, the families social workers have helped, or the children social workers have saved, or the parents that come back to thank the social workers.

Social Work

Social Work is a profession without enough respect or funding. The people who continue to show up are: Social Workers-
A person who feels driven to help others less fortunate than themselves. A person who continues to feel this way despite low funds, and not enough funding sources. A person who continues to feel this way despite ignorant viewpoints like the ones published on this site. Unlike what a fool wrote previously on this site, people must attend school, non-technical schools don’t count. A person who went to at least a 4 year school after high school and graduated with a Bachelors in Social Work (BSW). A person who went to at least six years of school after high school and graduated with a Master in Social Work (MSW). A person who grasps the ability of empathy and compassion while working out in the field, the class work has nothing to do with the easy of the job.
A person who can handle the most mentally draining times, again and again, but continue to wake up feeling driven to serve. These situations include reporting the abuse of the elderly, listening to a former alcoholic/drug addict admit to relapse, witnessing a child have their life beat out of them, seeing first hand the way mental abuse can hurt an individual, feeding children who have had nothing to eat for days, helping a family deal with a suicide of a loved one, find a home for an elderly parent when their family can’t handle them anymore, ensuring the mentally take their medications daily so they don’t end up re-committed into the hospital for erratic behavior and caring for the children who have no one to care for them.
"Social Work is harder than it seems." Don't judge.

Social Work Kool-Aid

Social Work Kool-Aid: (noun) A system of beliefs associated with the social work profession that closely resembles the NASW code of ethics. It includes the concept of unconditional positive regard for clients, respect for diversity, and the belief that all of society is interconnected.

The phrase "drinking the social work kool-aid" is most commonly used metaphorically when describing the phenomenon that occurs during the process of social work education, when students begin to adopt the professional values of social work as their personal values. This may lead to the student becoming more politically and morally liberal. Its use is akin to the common saying, "Gee, there must be something in the water" to imply that there is something inherent to a location that produces certain characteristics in the people that live there. The term implies some degree of blind acceptance and/or indoctrination.
"I used to be a Republican, but then I went to college and started drinking the social work kool-aid, and I totally became a democrat."

"Over my career I've soaked up so much of the social work kool-aid that I've started using Person-In-Environment thinking to assess how my dog is doing."

"There's just something about social workers...it's like they're all drinking the same kool-aid."
