Their early work was a little too 80's punk-rock for my taste. But when Is This It came out in '01, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp, Strokian sound, and a new sheen of punk-rock revival that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Kurt Cobain, but I think Julian Casablancas has a far more bitter, cynical sense of lyricism. In '03, Casablancas released this; Room on Fire!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Reptilia". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the dangers of the peer pressure and the prevalence of drugs. It's also a personal statement about the band itself!
