The early stages of Detroit syndrome may include symptoms like mental decline, confusion while exposed to other musical genres, disorientation, inability to speak or understand language, making things up, mental confusion, or inability to recognize common phrases.

Late stage symptoms include: social isolation, disorganized behavior, aggression, agitation, compulsive behavior, excitability, hostility, repetitive movements, self-harm, lack of restraint, delirium, and hallucinations.
