An archaic law that guarenteed the ruler of a particular place (a king, a lord, a baron ect.) first night privileges with any bride in his domain on her wedding night. Out of use today.

Also known by the Latin name "Prima Nocta"

Word Origin: French. Literally means "Right of the master"
In the movie "Braveheart", William and Murron marry in secret to avoid Murron being forced to sleep with the King because of the droit de seigneur.

In the tv show "The Office" Michael says he is instituting "Prima Nocta" to ensure that everyone dresses properly for Phyllis' wedding. He later admits he misconstrued the meaning of the phrase.
