Emotional Hardcore
Emo in it's purest and original form. True emo. It used to be a musical genre in the '80s until the world killed it in the 2000s by turning it into an insult and a label. Started by what is the first emo band to produce an album, Rites Of Spring, it was a combination of punk rock mixed with raw emotion, often related to love. Rites Of Spring was introduced and categorized as the very first band to play the Emotional Hardcore genre. Later, a shorter term was coined in place of Emotional Hardcore. This new word was Emocore. Then, after Emocore got around, people shortened it even more to Emo. Modern day people now use this word with completely different meaning. When they think of emo, they think of a kid with eyeliner crying in the corner, slitting his wrists while listening to Dashboard Confessional. They don't know the true meaning of emo, and it is indeed a very sad thing.
Rites of Spring is a truely talented emotional hardcore band. The real definition of emo, unlike many mainstream "emo" bands such as Dashboard Confessional, Get Up kids and Hawthorne Heights.

emotive hardcore
A common misconception is that emotive hardcore or 'emo' refers to metalcore or screamo bands such as Bring Me The Horizon, Asking Alexandria, etc. However, this is not the case. Emotive hardcore as a music genre actually refers to bands such as I Hate Myself, Braid, Sunny Day Real Estate, among others. There is no 'mainstream' emo band, and it is a genre generally not listened to by those who find the 'emo' subculture stereotype of black eyeliner, wrist-cutting, etc.

Emotive Hardcore
Emotive hardcore, or emo for short, is a music genre rooted from punk in the D.C. scene in the mid to late 80s. Most people would consider it and insult for an individual who likes to wear horn rimmed glasses, argyle sweaters and converse, but emo is mainly about the music. Bands like Rites of Spring and Moss Icon were two of the main bands in this scene. There is also Midwest Emo, Indie Emo pop rock, Twinkle Emo, and The emo revival. Skramz is also part of the emo music genre. Skramz is the real screamo, not what most people think what is screamo, which is actually metalcore, post-hardcore, and deathcore. Most of the fashion of real emos came along in the 1990s; They wore horn rimmed glasses, or cat eye glasses, had a gas station jacket, messenger bags, argyle sweaters, dyed their hair black, striped sweaters, favorite band shirts, studded belts, cardigans, converse, mary janes, argyle socks, peacoats. Fashion was always a secondary to the music, because it is always about supporting your favorite bands. Examples of emotive hardcore: Rites of Spring and Moss Icon. Examples of Midwest Emo: Cap N Jazz, Jawbreaker. Examples of Indie Emo pop rock: Sunny Day Real Estate, Texas is the Reason, The Get Up Kids. Examples of Skramz: Orchid, Page ninetynine, Majority Rule, City of Caterpillar. Examples of twinkle emo: Algernon Cadwallader. Examples of Emo revival: Modern Baseball, American Football, Snowing.
Emo is actually short for Emotive Hardcore, and it is actually a music genre, not a subculture.
